Abstract:

This article addresses the structural elements of the experiences of eight adult women who have lived on the streets in the city of Belo Horizonte, in 2021 and 2022. Focus groups and semi-structured interviews were conducted and analyzed using content analysis, focusing on three aspects of their life trajectories: the process of ending up on the streets, their experiences on the streets and future perspectives. The profile of the interviewees is, in general, black women, with varied motivations for going to the streets, including gender violence. Survival strategies based on the dynamics of social assistance services and access to emergency health services were reported, and prospects for the future were mainly linked to structural issues such as housing and work. The life trajectories of these women revealed the incidence of different forms of oppression that deprive them of social rights, consequently affecting the health-illness-care process. Therefore, for the purposes of public policies based on integrality and social justice, it is important to consider issues that affect these women's trajectories, such as the fragility of their social support network, barriers to access to health care, lack of leisure activities, and reduced autonomy.
