Abstract:

The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between having suffered psychological violence and self-perceived oral health in Brazilian older adults. A cross-sectional study was carried out with 22,123 older adults participating in the National Health Survey (PNS) in 2019. The outcome, self-perceived oral health, was assessed in a self-reported manner and violence was measured according to five questions about having experienced some type of violence psychological in the last 12 months. Independent variables included sociodemographic, psychosocial, behavioral and oral health factors. Statistical analysis was estimated using Poisson regression. It was observed that 10% of older adults reported having suffered some type of psychological violence. Older adults who reported having experienced situations of shouting and swearing (PR 1.20: 95% CI 1.08- 1.33), verbal threats (PR 1.17: 95% CI 1.01- 1.34), destruction of their property (PR 1.38: 95% CI 1.10- 1.71) or situations of psychological violence (PR 1.18: 95% CI 1.07- 1.30) showed a higher prevalence of negative self-perception of oral health when compared to those who reported not having suffered episodes of violence. Given the complexity of the determinants of self-perceived oral health, psychological violence adds another dimension to be considered in the older adults.
