Abstract:

The objective was to analyze toxic events in adolescents and determine if sociodemographic factors, the mode of exposure, the toxic agent, and the pre- and pandemic periods are associated with suicide attempts. A cross-sectional study was conducted using secondary data from adolescents exposed to toxic agents between 2015 and 2022, treated at the Brazilian Poison Control Center in Ceará. Prevalence ratios and their respective 95% CI were estimated using Poisson regression with robust variance between the explicative variables and suicide attempt. Out of 703 cases of poisoning in adolescents, 69.6% (95% CI 66.0-72.8) occurred in females, and 77.6% (95% CI 74.4–80.7) were suicide attempts. Regarding the toxic agents used, 63.9% of adolescents used drugs and 17.4% used pesticides, with 44.1% of these cases involving an insecticide illegally used in Brazil. In the multivariate analysis, being in the pandemic period, being female, increasing age, being at home, using drugs and pesticides, and the combined use of two or more agents remained associated with a higher prevalence of suicide attempts. The findings highlight the need for preventive actions focused on the domestic environment, the control of toxic substances, and the protection of vulnerable adolescents, particularly females.
