Abstract:

Suicide is a serious public health problem in Brazil, characterized as a complex and multifactorial phenomenon. Despite regulatory advances, challenges persist in the implementation of effective public policies for its prevention. This theoretical essay aims to discuss suicide prevention in Brazil, identifying challenges, limitations, and pathways to strengthen public policies in this area. The text presents an overview of the current scenario, examines the strategies adopted and the difficulties encountered in prevention, and suggests pathways for progress in this area. It argues that strengthening preventive policies requires addressing stigma, expanding mental health promotion actions, and fostering a collective commitment from various sectors of society to the promotion of life.
