Abstract:

We aimed to examine the temporal evolution (2003 to 2022) of homicides against Indigenous women and girls (IWG) in Brazil, victims' profiles, means of aggression, and territorial distribution. We conducted a retrospective ecological study with population data of IWG (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) and homicides (Ministry of Health); analyzed by descriptive statistics, establishing victim characteristics, types of homicide, proportional rates, and geographical distribution, plotted on map using QGIS. We found a 500% increase in the number of IWG homicides between 2003 and 2022, with the youngest, unmarried, and less educated being the main victims; in homicides mainly committed by cutting/piercing objects and in the domestic environment. The Midwest Region has the highest number of homicides (n=157) and a rate of 9.7 per 100,000 IWG. Mato Grosso do Sul is the state with the highest absolute number (n=149) and rate (15.7 deaths per 100,000 IWA). The findings point to the urgency of preventive measures, highlighting the need for specific interventions to contain this escalation of homicides against IWG. The identification of regions and Indigenous groups most affected enables the implementation of targeted strategies aimed at protecting the most vulnerable IWG.
