Abstract:

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of self-reported social discrimination by the hearing impaired in Brazilian health services and to analyse factors associated with the discrimination. Methods: Cross-sectional population-based study, using dataa household epidemiological survey, throughout the Brazilian territory in 2013. The final sample of this study comprised 1,464 individuals with hearing loss self-reported. Poisson regression was used to calculate crude and adjusted Prevalence Ratios (PR) for the investigation of the prevalence of discrimination in health services and their respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: The self-reported prevalence of discrimination in Brazilian health services by people with hearing impairment was 15%. The highest reasons for the prevalence of discrimination self-reported in health services were individuals of black colour or race (PR=1.58; 95% CI: 1.06-2.34) and who reported having limitations in activities of daily living (PR=1.52; 95% CI: 1.15-2.00). Conclusion: Hearing impaired people of black colour/race and who have limitations in activities of daily living have the highest prevalence of discrimination in Brazilian health services. Health policies and actions, as well as strategies during the training of professionals in the area, must be implemented so that this scenario can be modified.
