Abstract:

This study is a scoping review with the objective of exploring studies that addressed the association of Health Literacy (HL) with frailty in elderly people. Using the Joanna Briggs Institute method, 1091 records were analyzed in the following databases: Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature; Cochrane Library; Ageline; PubMed portal, which encompasses Medline, Scielo, Embase and Health Evidence. The results included 19 studies (10 cross-sectional and 9 longitudinal). These highlighted the prevalence of Asian studies and the association between low HL and greater frailty. However, a diversity of methodologies and assessment instruments was observed, without global consensus. The study highlighted that most studies point to the importance of HL as a modifiable factor, essential to mitigate frailty and promote healthy aging. The review confirms the association between low levels of HL and greater frailty in the elderly and highlights that is necessary more longitudinal studies to improve this knowledge, especially in the brazilian context.
