Abstract:

This article presents an ethnographic study of the narratives of people with chronic kidney disease about their experiences of illness, shared through the podcast “Renalcast: talking about kidney life”. Using a qualitative approach, we analyzed the content of the episodes of the first season of Renalcast, its promotional material on social networks and, finally, we conducted interviews with the creators of the project. The research stages allowed us to examine the logics and meanings attributed to the disease, to the podcast, to care, to the knowledge of patients and health professionals, aspects in which narrative construction implies a double legitimacy, by performing a position of experience and expertise. The project functions as a tool for health education aimed at caring for people living with a diagnosis of chronic kidney disease and as a space for communication and reciprocal exchanges. The results show that the podcast's characteristics of mobility, informal communication and proximity to the listening public were fundamental to the development of the “renal” narratives.
