Abstract:

An ecological study analyzed the evolution of the number of physiotherapists and physiotherapy appointments in the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), relating them to socioeconomic factors Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and SUS budget per capita. Data were obtained from DATASUS, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), and the Public Health Budget Information System (SIOPS) for the period 2008 to 2019. Statistical analysis included covariance, Pearson correlations, Tukey's contrast, and correlation maps. A positive correlation was observed between the number of physiotherapists and GDP per capita across all federal units (FUs). The number of appointments was positively correlated with GDP per capita in seven FUs, notably Paraíba (r=0.96), Acre (r=0.88), and Amazonas (r=0.84); and with SUS budget per capita in Acre (r=0.84), Amazonas (r=0.76), Tocantins (r=0.73), Paraíba (r=0.65), and Rondônia (r=0.64). The distribution of physiotherapists and appointments was heterogeneous. GDP per capita and SUS budget per capita were positively associated with an increase in the number of physiotherapists and the quantity of appointments, particularly in FUs in the Northern region.
