Abstract:

The objective of this study was to identify racial inequities in oral health in the Brazilian population. This cross-sectional study used data64,830 Brazilians aged between 18 and 59 who took part in the 2019 National Health Survey. The outcomes were: self-assessment of oral health, loss of 13 teeth or more, use of prosthesis, and use of recent dental services. The explanatory variables included race, gender, age, income, education, and area of residence. Poisson regression was used to obtain prevalence ratios (PR) with 95% confidence interval (CI). Of the total, 41.8% were white, 46.2% brown and 12.0% black. Black individuals had a lower prevalence of positive self-assessment (PR= 0.90 95%CI 0.87-0.93) and recent use of dental services (PR=0.93 95%CI (0.89-0.97), as well as a higher prevalence of tooth loss (PR=1.32 95%CI 1.18-1.47) compared to whites. Browns had a lower prevalence of positive self-assessment (PR= 0.94, 95% CI 0.92-0.96) and recent use (PR=0.95 95% CI 0.92-0.98), and a higher prevalence of tooth loss (PR=1.23 95% CI 1.14-1.34) compared to whites. The findings revealed racial inequities in oral health in the Brazilian population, racism being the major perpetuator of these disparities.
