Abstract:

Studies demonstrate the racial ivity in homicides in Brazil. Regional and racial differences in homicides using geostatistical techniques and propensity scores. Thus, clusters of municipalities with high (hotSpot) and low (coldSpot) homicide rates were identified and, together with demographic variables were used to calculate the propensity score. It is observed that black people had a 49% greater chance of death by homicide than White people, after matching by propensity score. Homicides occur predominantly among young, single men with low education. The geostatistical view showed that the municipalities in the hotSpot cluster had homicide rates five times higher than those in the coldSpot cluster, with the Northeast region being the most affected. It was concluded that skin color is a factor associated with homicide independent of other variables, including spatial ones, highlighting racial ivity in homicides. The mapping of rates suggests regions with underreporting of homicides. This study proposes an integrated approach between geospatial analysis and the propensity score to evaluate the social and spatial inequalities of homicides in the country, allowing for better allocation of public policy resources to reduce homicides.
