Abstract:

Analyze the influence of racial and gender inequalities on food insecurity in households in the state of Rio de Janeiro. A cross-sectional study was developed using the 2017 Household Budget Survey. Information on household characteristics, residents, and food insecurity were used. For the analysis of racial and gender inequalities, self-reported sex and skin color questions were used. Logistic regression with odds ratio (OR) estimates and a 95% confidence interval was conducted to investigate the association between racial profiles and moderate/severe food insecurity. A total of 3,180 households were evaluated. The highest level of education was observed in white women profiles (39%; 95% CI: 34.3-44.0), as well as the highest per capita income (46%; 95% CI: 41.0-51.1). Households headed by black women were more strongly associated (OR: 2.75; 95% CI: 1.72-4.4) with moderate/severe food insecurity, even after adjusting for education, per capita family income, and the presence of children under 18. The interaction between gender and race/color markers is closely related to food insecurity, highlighting the inequalities faced by black women
