Abstract:

This essay seeks to expand the dialogue between Physical Activity (PA) and healtha concept-oriented on salutogenesis (origin of health) that stresses the pathogenic model (origin of diseases). It presents the main foundations of the theory, created by Aaron Antonovsky, whose health promotion model is centered on the pillar of Sense of Coherence (SOC) which is constituted by significance, comprehensibility, and manageability. Afterward, the relationships between PA and salutogenesis are presented, which can be used in various life cycles and contexts of practice. Studies indicate that people with a strengthened SOC are more likely to remain physically active, but this relationship is not instrumental and depends on contextual, cognitive, and affective elements. It concludes by indicating that new studies should be carried out in Brazil and that salutogenesis is a fruitful perspective to guide a new conception of PA and health.
