Abstract:

Understanding the ill individual through their narrative makes it possible to access the lived experience of the disease and the singularities of each individual. In this sense, the narrative approach proves to be relevant for the investigation of different health conditions, including leprosy. The objective was to understand the experience of living with leprosy through the narratives of affected individuals. This qualitative, narrative study was conducted with six people diagnosed with leprosy in the municipality of Paulo Afonso, Bahia. Data were collected through interviews using the McGill Illness Narrative Interview (MINI) model. Living with leprosy resulted in loss of identity, social isolation, and physical limitations due to late diagnosis. However, specialized follow-up and support from family and professionals increased knowledge about the disease, improved adherence to treatment, and enabled a re-signification of the condition. The study also found that Primary Health Care has weaknesses related to professional training and the definition of referral flows, highlighting the need to strengthen professional training and implement systematic educational strategies. It is concluded that incorporating a practice based on understanding the individual's narrative in leprosy care promotes more humanized care, capable of breaking down barriers of exclusion and confronting stigma, thus contributing to the social reintegration of individuals.
