Abstract:

To evaluate the food consumption of Brazilian older adults according to the presence of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) and, among the older adults with the disease, to investigate food consumption according to excess weight (EW) and diabetes mellitus (DM). A cross-sectional study using data from the 2019 National Health Survey (n=22,728). Food consumption: assessed using markers of healthy and unhealthy eating; diagnoses of SAH and DM: self-reported; EW: classified as BMI ≥27 kg/m². Prevalence ratios were estimated using Poisson regression. The prevalence of SAH was 56.4% (95%CI: 55.3; 57.5). Older adults with SAH had a higher frequencies of chicken consumption, semi-skimmed/skimmed milk and of self-reported high salt consumption. Those with both SAH and EW had a lower consumption of beans and vegetables, high salt intake and habit to replace meals with snacks. Those with SAH and DM had a greater consumption of fruits, skimmed milk, and diet drinks, along with a lower consumption of sweets, soft drinks, and ≥5 ultra-processed foods. In conclusion, older adults with hypertension had a diet that did not favor disease control, including those with EW. However, older adults with both hypertension and DM exhibited better dietary habits.
