Abstract:

Purpose: To verify the association of physical activity with demographic and behavioral characteristics among adolescents and young adults. Methods: Cross-sectional study with a sample (n=198,861) divided into two age groups: AG-1, PeNSE/2015 (14/17 yrs) and PNS/2019-A (18/21 yrs); and AG-2, PeNSE/2012 (14/17 yrs) and PNS/2019-B (21/24 yrs). PeNSE and PNS are equiprobable due to the IBGE methodology and the ion of the AG. We describe (1) characteristics in proportions; (2) mean minutes/week and active individuals as a percentage (95%CI) for AG-1 and AG-2; (3) domains of physical activity and ethnicities in means and percentiles; and (4) Poisson regression adjusted for surveys, demographic characteristics, behaviors, and gender. Results: Among young adults, there was an increase in physical activity in AG-1 and AG-2 (266 min/week; 353 min/week), the percentage of active individuals (21.5%; 27.5%), prevalence (PR=1.094; PR=1.075), and alcohol consumption (7.6%; 24.4%). Healthy eating was positively correlated with physical activity in AG-1. Physical activity decreased among women (PR=0.588; PR=0.683). Conclusion: Increases among young adults offer no health benefits, as they resulthigh physical activity at work and low during leisure, reflecting the physical activity paradox.
