Abstract:

With an intersectional approach and a focus on the experiences of Quilombola women, this study aims to analyze the pregnancy-puerperal cycle from the perspective of Black women living in Quilombo remnant communities in the agreste region of Alagoas, Brazil. It is grounded in Crenshaw’s contributions to intersectionality, exploring the relationships between race, gender, and social class in health. Following a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 11 women, and the analysis was anchored in Foucault’s discourse perspective. The results were categorized into two themes: “childbirth experiences” and “interactions with the healthcare system.” Reports highlighted obstetric violence, challenges to women's agency during childbirth, and restrictions on the presence of companions, contradicting legal guidelines. Additionally, the study reveals inequalities in access to healthcare services, influenced by clientelist relationships and institutional racism. The findings suggest that reproductive healthcare for Black Quilombola women remains shaped by structural inequalities, reinforcing the need to consider social markers to ensure equitable care and promote healthcare practices that respect these women’s autonomy and rights.
