Abstract:

This study investigates how ideologies intrinsic to the medical/dental-industrial complex are incorporated into the social representations within the field of dentistry, fostering consumerism and promotion within the sector. The data were obtained through semi-structured interviews conducted with 16 dentists (from both public and private sectors) and 25 dental students from public and private dental schools, and analyzed using the Collective Subject Discourse (CSD) method. Field observations were conducted both in person and in social networks, accompanied by field diary entries, and later combined within the context of the discussion. We analyzed the virtual profiles mentioned in the interviews (40 personal, 29 educational sector, and 21 companies in the dental sector) and extracted a CSD with six categories related to the theme. It can be concluded that the medical/dental-industrial complex impacts dentists and dentistry students. Social networks, as unregulated spaces, enable dental-influencers to promote consumerism aligned with the market, indiferente to traditional academic and scientific production. Promoting ethical scientific dissemination is essential. Regulatory policies in Collective Health and dental education must address social networks' role in education.
