Abstract:

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of the main barriers to participation in public physical activity (PPA) programs, according to sociodemographic characteristics in residents of Brazil and the Northeast region. Methods: Study with datathe National Health Survey (2019), individuals aged 18 or over who reported knowing and not participating in the PPA. The dependent variables were the main barriers to participation, analyzed according to sociodemographic variables and stratified by Brazil (BR) and the Northeast region (NR). Results: The prevalence and respective 95% confidence intervals. Results: The most frequent barriers were lack of interest (42.2% BR and 45.1% NR), opening hours (32.8% BR and 30.6% NR), distancehome (11.2% BR and 11.8% NR) and health problems (8.1% BR and 8.4% NR). Sociodemographic characteristics such as sex, age, marital status, having a paid job and family income showed statistical differences in one or more of the barriers studied. Conclusion: The prevalence of barriers to non-participation in PPA was high and varied according to sociodemographic characteristics. Strategies to address barriers must be targeted at priority groups to ensure greater adherence to PPA.
