Abstract:

Introduction: Adequate sleep is essential for an individual's health. This study aimed to analyze poor quality and inadequate duration of sleep and their associated factors, in adults, before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methodology: Population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with individuals aged 18 years or older. The outcomes were poor sleep quality (including regular, poor and very poor), and inadequate sleep duration (<7h or ≥9h). The independent variables included sociodemographic, behavioral, and health characteristics. Adjusted Poisson regression was performed to evaluate associations, with a significance level of 5%. Results: A total of 1,683 individuals were analyzed. Before the pandemic, poor sleep quality was associated with female sex, mental health, and health perception, and inadequate duration was associated with marital status and health perception. During the pandemic, poor sleep quality was associated with female sex, alcohol use, multimorbidity and mental health, while inadequate duration was associated with income. Conclusion: Some population groups appear to be more vulnerable to sleep-related problems, demonstrating the relevance of the topic for the development of public policies aimed at sleep disorders.
