Abstract:

Objective: To estimate the prevalence of alcohol abuse (exposure) and its association with unprotected condom sexual activity (outcome) among young Brazilian adults. Methods: A cross-sectional study carried out with secondary data from the 2019 National Health Survey with 6,255 young Brazilian adults aged 18 to 24 years. The Propensity Score method was applied to create the inverse of the selection probability (IPS) to analyze the relationship between episodic alcohol abuse and unprotected sexual activity. The crude and adjusted SPI-weighted association was tested using Poisson regression to estimate Prevalence Ratio (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Results: The combined prevalence of alcohol abuse and unprotected sexual activity was 63.6% (95%CI: 61.0-66.3) and was associated (p=0.003). In the crude and adjusted analysis, there was an association between alcohol abuse and unsafe sex. However, the magnitude in the model structured by the propensity score (RP=1.07; 95%CI: 1.02-1.13) indicated an adjustment of the gross association measure (RP=1.13; 95%CI: 1.05-1.22). Conclusion: It was found that alcohol abuse is associated with unprotected sexual activity. Reinforces the need for public policies that combine youth prevention and harm reduction.
