Abstract:

The aim was to describe the adherence to school meals and potential associated factors among students in the municipal school network of Pelotas, Rio Grande do Sul. A cross-sectional study was conducted with students enrolled in the ninth grade of municipal primary schools located in the urban area of the municipality. Information was collected through a standardized self-administered questionnaire. Weight and height measurements were taken to assess nutritional status. Chi-square, linear trend or Fisher\'s exact statistical tests were used for bivariate analyses, and Poisson regression with robust variance was used for both crude and adjusted analyses. Prevalence of school meal consumption was 77,9%, and effective adherence (consumption for four to five days a week) was 38,1%, being higher among students with a diferente skin color (1.39; 95% CI 1.13-1.70) and those who were overweight (1.35; 95% CI 1,13-1,70). A low prevalence of effective adherence to school meals was observed, highlighting the need for nutritional and dietary education among students to increase awareness about the importance of proper nutrition and the food provided by the school. This aims to encourage healthy choices and, consequently, promote better adherence to the program.
